Museums and Galleries in Linz

Opening stimulating horizons, dedicated to communicating art and culture, living stores of knowledge, laboratories of the future with an experimental view of the world: the museums and galleries of the Provincial Capital City of Linz invite an active confrontation with the past and current, contemporary trends, casting a glance into the future at the same time.

A Squared Passion for Collecting

Over 8,000 square meters of museum exhibition space are available just in the Lentos Art Museum for extensive explorations and self-chosen pauses in between. Strictly speaking, though, the exhibition area is even more expansive than that: changing special exhibitions in the Linz museums and galleries offer constant movement and fascinating encounters.

Lentos Art Museum

With its international collection and changing exhibitions, the Lentos Art Museum, as the successor to the New Gallery, is considered one of the most important museums of modern art in Austria. The spectacular new museum building on the Danube houses a collection of paintings and graphic arts of classical modernism and the present. From classical modernism, the Lentos Art Museum holds important paintings by Klimt, Schiele, Kokoschka, Corinth and Pechstein, which can be seen in the permanent collection along with works by Nitsch, Prachensky, Cragg and Keith Haring.

Art of the Past, Adventure of the Present, and Music of the Future

One of the most important collections of Austrian art history and folklore is located in the Linz Castle Museum. The largest Alfred Kubin Collection in the world is at home in the Gallery of the Province of Upper Austria, where the museum is also the exhibition venue for classical painting, sculpture, all the way to media installations by young artists. The Biology Center in Dornach is a center of biological and natural science research and education. The history of the City of Linz, arts and crafts, exhibitions of socio-political topics, and changing exhibitions on archeology and natural history themes are housed in the Linz City Museum Nordico. The O.K, Upper Austrian Open House of Culture, accompanies contemporary artistic work from the idea to the exhibition as an experimental laboratory for art. And in the Museum of the Future, the Ars Electronica Center, interactive installations arouse enthusiasm with the high-tech of tomorrow.
